Too little, too slow, too late

zur deutschen Version

Berlin, 23.09.2019 – Scientists are dismayed by the federal climate package: Nature knows no political compromises. The facts are on the table, the warnings about the climate crisis have been issued for a long time. Now is the time to act!

The Federal Government’s measures defined in the climate package are absolutely inadequate. They do not do justice to the urgency of the climate crisis and the reduction targets that must be pursued. As a matter of fact, the government is ignoring the scientific findings on climate change and its consequences. As a prosperous European industrial nation, Germany can and must set a good example on a global scale and show that climate neutrality and prosperity are compatible. The political leitmotif of changing the status quo as little as possible comes at the price of higher costs and human suffering, especially in the countries of the Global South and for today’s young people. Only an ambitious climate package would facilitate the move towards a climate neutral society.

The Federal Government’s reduction targets for greenhouse gases are far from sufficient to achieve Germany’s contribution to the 1.5 degree target of the Paris Climate Agreement. The climate package’s catalogue of measures is inconsistent. There is a lack of will to initiate innovations in low-carbon products and the necessary societal transformation. Scientific analyses commissioned by the Federal Government show that the proposed CO2 price in particular is set far too low on a short and long term scale to develop steering effects.

The climate protection package would have been a chance to show that the beginning of a climate neutral future can be designed in a socially equitable way. A historic opportunity is being wasted by the Federal Government. Scientists for Future therefore urges the coalition of CDU/CSU and SPD to proactively align their measures with the necessary, scientifically proven requirements before the start of the World Climate Conference in December. We are happy to support the Federal Government with our scientific expertise.
